No more green vestments for a long time. Now we wear purple.
No more green vestments for a long time. Now we wear purple. It all begins on Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Here’s a great story…
Some time ago, I was saying Mass on the first Sunday in Lent at St. Mary’s Parish in Pueblo, Colorado. During the homily I went into the congregation and asked a rhetorical question, “Why are we wearing purple?” Kids don’t know the difference between rhetorical questions and informational ones. So this little red head kid in the third pew just yelled out “Cuz Jesus did!”
I should have left it at that, but no, I pursue his answer.”Well why did Jesus wear purple?” He says, “Cuz He was weird.” You know I guess he was right. Jesus was considered an outsider and trouble maker. They eventually arrested Him and killed Him.
We celebrate his suffering and death during Lent when He made it possible for us to enter the Kingdom. He did it for the forgiveness or our sins. But the story doesn’t end on Good Friday… Easter is the real story and remember… Heaven’s in your future.
