“We Are the World”

41 years ago, today, on Jan 28, 1985, 45 of the biggest names in music from Bruce Springsteen to Stevie Wonder came together to record a song, “We are the World.”

It came about when Harry Belafonte challenged all the black musicians and singers to do something for all the black people in Africa who were starving from hunger. He knew the Irish and British musical artists came together with their song, “Do they know it’s Christmas” and it was such a huge success for charity.

Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote “We are the world” and it became the #1 single record. It raised millions for those suffering from hunger. 10% of the money raised went to help the homeless. It was truly a miracle of music.

Hungry children still have to suffer. There are countless numbers of homeless people in our cities. So, what do we do?

We won’t be asked to sing or write a song. We can do something besides prayer: Perhaps volunteering at a food pantry or soup kitchen. Or even making a donation to those programs that help those who are in need.

We are the world and some of our family are still suffering. Thanks for helping.
