Fr. Dick’s Spiritual Reflection 11/4/2026
DO YOU PREFER TO LEAD OR FOLLOW?
Yesterday many Americans went to the polls to vote. We hope those elected will honor their pledge to work for the good of all.
On this date in 1952, Dwight Eisenhower was elected president. We are grateful for his spearheading the Interstate Highway System. On this day, Nov. 4, Ronald Regan was elected president and he showed us that Republicans and Democrats can work together. Also on this day, Barack Obama was elected President. He proved that you don’t have to be white to be president.
We honor these men and all LEADERS. I once heard an elected official mention he wasn’t sure if those behind him were following or chasing. Good leaders have people following not chasing.
The greatest leader of all time is JESUS. He is The Good Shepherd.
Interesting that the shepherd farmer goes behind the sheep on horseback with sheep dogs and pushes the sheep forward. Jesus goes in front of the sheep and invites us to follow. Perhaps that is the key to good leadership…to invite but never force; to encourage and not order; to praise and not condemn; to love and not hate; to forgive and not seek revenge.
Always remember that good leaders have good followers. Both are needed.
