“God is With Us”
First of all…A very Merry Christmas from all of us at the Vincentian Parish Mission Center.
The picture is of the Nativity Scene at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. It was given to the Vatican by a diocese in Southern Italy and is uniquely representative of the area. All the materials used are from products of the region. There are some features that I have not seen before. The shepherds are bringing products of their life, namely fruits and vegetables. Hidden are the wolf and the lamb together. There are also persons representing the people.
Pope Leo had some great reactions to this scene. He remarked about the symbolism of peace in the togetherness of the wolf and the lamb. He talked about the simplicity of it all, especially in the gifts of the shepherds.
He then used the idea of a Nativity Scene for everyone. How all are reminded that “God is With Us,’ and that God is for all. Pope Leo remarked how the simple birth of Jesus calls us to be humble and give praise to God as Jesus did as He sought peace and love for everyone. Look on the Nativity Scene with great Hope because God is here.
