St. Gregory the Great

Today is the feast day of St. Gregory the Great who was also a Pope.  He was called ‘Great’ because of his contribution in so many different fields.

He moved the Vatican Church to be a ‘missionary’ church and so its influence was felt all over Europe especially in England.  Gregory wrote many essays on Christian Doctrine.  He reformed the Liturgy with a special interest in music.  From that interest the Church accepted the standard of liturgical music in Gregorian Chant.

Gregory never lost his interest in monastic life as he founded several monasteries, especially in Italy. He is to be admired for his passion for excellence in so many endeavors, especially in his love for his Church and his faith.

Gregory was born into a family of nobility and wealth and gave that up for his commitment to Church.  Gregory is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students, teachers and Popes. He once described the Pope as the ‘servant of the servants of God.’   It’s easy to celebrate a man like this.
