Fr. Dick’s Spiritual Reflection–10/8/2025
Out of the Ashes…
Two great events happened on this day in history. In 1956 Don Larsen pitched a perfect game for the first time in a world series game and in 1871 the great Chicago fire, destroying most of the city, occurred.
While I love baseball, my reflection is on the fire in Chicago. I look at the city today and I remember that a fire destroyed almost all of the city. One hundred fifty plus years later, it has become a major place in the United States. Its history is remarkable and surpassed by its beauty as it harbors Lake Michigan. It is the home of millions of ethnic people from all parts of the world.
What I reflect upon is the resolve, strength, courage and generosity of so many people who wanted their homes to be rebuilt and they did it! A lesson for our world is that anything can happen when people come together for the common good.
