Fr. Bob’s Spiritual Reflection–5/28/2025
St. Augustine of Canterbury
HE’S in Charge!
I’m reflecting on St. Augustine of Canterbury today. His feast day is celebrated in England on May 26 and other places on May 28 and our missal now has his feast day on May 27. What an interesting life! He was ordained in Rome and was a prior in a monastery there and was happy in a simple way. Then Pope Gregory I, asked him to go to England to evangelize and bring the Catholic church there. Augustine had thirty men to go with him, and they landed in Kent. The mission faltered and Augustine and the men returned to Rome. Pope Gregory I was confident in Augustine and made him the Abbot of the community and sent them back to Kent.
They achieved some success when Augustine converted the king, Ethelbert. Thousands followed and the Catholic church was founded. It is easy to see in Augustine’s journey how God is in charge. A good thing to remember from time to time.
