Fr. Dick’s Spiritual Reflection–7/1/2026
JULY 1st IN HISTORY
Today is a very important day in the history of the world. 250 years ago, in 1776, the first vote of independence from Great Britain happened and was finalized on July 4th, 1776.
1867 marked the birth of Canada as a nation. 1863 saw the bloodiest battle of the Civil War in Gettysburg, PA and in 1963 zip codes were introduced.
I decided to make my reflection on our neighbor, Canada. The other events will get plenty of attention, especially as we celebrate July 4th.
Growing up in La Salle, IL, it was always important to have good neighbors and be good neighbors. I loved ours and have wonderful memories of so many great happenings in those neighborhoods.
So, while we celebrate our good fortune, I think it is important to thank God for giving us neighbors and our two special ones are Mexico and Canada. Every place has greatness and also weaknesses. Today we reflect upon their greatness especially since we celebrate the birthday of Canada as a nation.
My thoughts are that I pray Canada does well and that its people feel safe, healthy and happy. It is a joy to go there and experience all the beauty and greatness they have. The main message is the importance of being a good neighbor no matter where we live.
