“THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS”

March 4th marks the anniversary of the death of St. Casimir. Casimir was born into nobility. His father was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania.

The battle for power in these regions had brought Casimir to the forefront of war campaigns.  As a prince at the age of thirteen, he was offered the throne of Hungary but failed to gain control and he failed.  He withdrew and his father punished him.

Casimir prayed and studied religion and as a very young man inspired many different groups of people. He was constantly searching for ways to help people and he gave himself up to a life of prayer and became a model of piety. He reigned briefly as king of Poland during his father’s absence but died of lung disease when he was 25.

The Gospel today spoke of the mother of Zebedee’s sons asking Jesus to reserve a place in the kingdom for them. Jesus asked her if they were willing to endure the sacrifices that He would endure.  Casimir was a young kid who would give it a go.
