Feast Day of Saint Pope Pius V
Now we await the election of the man who will try to fill Pope Francis shoes…not an easy responsibility. A week from today the conclave to elect the next pope will begin.
And today we celebrate the feast day of Saint Pope Pius V. He was born Antonio Ghislieri so we know he served in a long line of Italian Popes and here we are in the midst of three popes who were not, namely Poland, Germany and Argentina. Who knows what country is next. But let’s celebrate Pius V. Two of his greatest gifts were the Roman Catechism and the Roman Missal that were used for four centuries.
As a cardinal he had a reputation for putting orthodoxy before personalities, prosecuting eight French bishops for heresy. Interesting story of his stand against nepotism rebuking his predecessor Pius IV when he tried to make a 13-year-old family member a cardinal! I celebrate him as one who just wanted to do what was right and good. Just like Pope Francis wanting to be remembered as a “good guy” wanting to do good. Hooray for that!
