St. Bridget, Saint and Servant to the Poor
Today is the feast day of St. Bridget. She was born in Sweden and was married to the Swedish King Magnus II and was the mother of eight.
After her husband died, she went to Rome to begin a life of prayer and service to the poor. Her husband had left her land that she used to establish convents and monasteries.
She later founded the order called the Bridgettines. She was one of the first to show a life of prayer AND service to the poor could go hand in hand.
She surely was one who understood the parable in today’s gospel where Jesus talked about where seed sown grows…not on paths, not on rocky soil, nor among thorns, but only on good soil.
She did that well and became one of the patronesses of all Europe, along with Catherine of Siena and Teresa Benedicta. Pope Boniface IX canonized her in 1391. Bridget died on July 23 1374.
