Not too long ago a lady asked me to bless a medal for her child. Then she asked a question which very few people ever consider. So I thought I’d consider it for you. She asked me, “Just what does a blessing do?”
Here’s what I told her. A blessing sets something (or someone) apart specifically for some holy or spiritual purpose. It also can call upon God to protect and look kindly on an object or person. For example, when I bless a car, I implicitly ask God to keep the drivers and passengers safe. So, bottom line, it really is very easy to understand a blessing. Let’s set this object or person aside for a holy purpose.
