Spiritual Reflection

I have a little time now (don’t we all) and I’m doing things that I haven’t done in a while, like looking into century old history.  

Because our founder Vincent DePaul had such an influence on the kings of France, I checked in on some of that history.  I came to appreciate the famous preacher, Fr. Jean-Baptiste Massillon.  He was the preacher of the Court and was asked to preach the eulogy at Louis XIV’s funeral.  King Louis reigned for 72 years and declared himself the greatest.  He planned his own funeral… Gold Casket; Dimly lit St. Denis Cathedral; and a single lit candle on top of his casket.

What Father Massillon said and did at the funeral is at the heart of my reflection today.  When he began to speak, he went to the casket, blew out the candle and said “Only God is Great.” 

Yes, during these times I hope we have learned that We Need God and He is Great.

I’m reminded of this reality, when I’m in California, by a friend who is a jockey there.  He may someday retire as one of the greatest.  Every time he returns to the winner’s circle, he looks upward and thanks and praises the God he needs, and he knows He is Great. 

Let’s remind people of this too.  Then our light will stay on.
