Parish Mission during Advent
Greetings from St. Mary’s Church in Frydek, Texas. Each year in December, I conduct a parish mission for two mission churches and I love the spirit of this rural part of Texas. These two churches are 10 miles apart about an hour’s drive west of Houston, Texas. This time of Advent is such a good time for a parish mission as we await the celebration of Christmas and we look for something special to do to get ready. People from both churches look forward to and attend the mission. I love being a part of this spirit every year.
St. Mary’s is one of two buildings in the city and it stands out in the middle of a rural setting. I’m reminded of how church is the center of our spiritual life. In the midst of nothing, stands something so important. My advent prayer is that the “Church” returns to this status, as something so important and special. I pray that Christmas is not only a celebration of a special Birthday, but also the rebirth of something so important as the “Church.”
